Soil Reclamation Processes: Microbiological Analysis and Applications

Low-level radioactive wastes are generated from nuclear power plants, research institutions, hospitals, universities, radiopharmaceutical manufacturers, fuel fabrication industry, government energy research, and military programs. In addition to radionuclides, the bulk of the waste consists of natural and synthetic organic materials. These wastes are usually disposed of in shallow-land trenches and pits. Of particular concern in the disposal of solid wastes is the contamination of surface and ground waters by waste leachates containing radionuclides and other toxic substances. Some problems encountered over the past 35 years of shallow-land disposal of low-level radioactive wastes on both government and commercial sites are biota intrusion, biodegradation of waste forms, trench cover subsidence, migration of radionuclides due to the presence of chelating and complexing agents, contamination of ground surfaces, release of radioactive gases, flooding, fire, erosion, siting in areas that are geologically very complex, water accumulation in disposal trenches and disposal in areas of high topographic relief, which make surface water movement a particular site concern.
